For her flag design, Currier, who has long championed the artistic spirit of the 1930s WPA movement in her dedication to highlighting historically under-represented minorities and unknown figures in blazingly charged portraits, chose to feature her 2019 painting Salvavidas: Incarcerated Firefighters of Malibu (after Delacroix). In her reworking of the French artist’s Liberty Leading the People, Currier has fused her own experience with the devastating 2018 Woolsey Fire through the re-imagining of Marianne and her Parisian revolutionaries as women firefighters. She writes, “The piece highlights the inherent dignity of women laborers and incarcerated women the world over, who are all too often disparaged and overlooked.” This 2020 flag release also coincides with the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment, guaranteeing and protecting women’s constitutional right to vote.
